THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME…IN ONE DAY

WHAT IS IT?

Career Shadowing involves matching a high school student with a person in the community to experience a chosen occupation in action.  The student observes, discusses, and participates in daily activities and responsibilities and asks pertinent questions related to the career.  The student also completes an assignment to record the day’s experience.  The length of the day for shadowing should be a minimum of three hours but could extend to a full workday depending on the shadowing experience and the business partner agreement.

Who is involved?

Career Shadowing is a cooperative effort of the School Board of Levy County, Chiefland Chamber of Commerce, and the Academy Advisory Board.  School-to-Career Coordinators will match local business members with selected students.

What are the benefits?

Student:

ü Creates a relevancy of classroom education to future career goals

ü Provides a realistic perspective of work habits, attitudes, and job expectations

ü Helps to determine personal suitability of occupational and educational goals

Business:

ü Promotes positive community public relations

ü Allows the business community to share in the educational process

ü Stresses employability skills

ü Provides the employer with a pool of future applicants who can demonstrate proper work attitudes and understand job expectations.

Business Responsibilities

Before Career Shadowing Day:

ü Plan to orient your student, schedule a tour, and arrange  hands-on experience.

ü Let your colleagues know about your commitment to Career Shadowing.

ü If an unforeseen event prohibits you from participating in the Career Shadowing experience, please arrange to have an associate host your assigned student.  If any changes are necessary, please be sure to notify the School-to-Career Coordinator as soon as possible. You can contact the Academy Instructor at 493-6000.

Career Shadowing Day:

ü Help the assigned student gain an understanding of your business and your occupation.

ü Share your educational background, your personal career history, ideas about career development actions which affect careers, and what it takes to be successful.

ü Establish a mentor relationship with your student.  Encourage him/her to maintain contact with you and report back after following up on your recommendations.

After Career Shadowing Day:

ü Provide feedback on the day’s activities by completing and returning the business evaluation form within in ten (10) days of the shadowing experience.

ü Be proud of a job well done.  Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise with tomorrow’s workforce.

Student Responsibilities

ü Confirm his/her appointment by telephoning the business contact; introduce himself/herself as a Career Shadowing student from Chiefland High School and discuss the arrival and departure time for the assignment.

ü Wear dress attire appropriate for the shadowing experience.

ü Arrive to shadow assignment on time.

ü Be involved, interested, and interactive during the experience.

ü Display a friendly, positive, and professional attitude.

ü Complete the “Student Research Assignment Form” with his/her business contact.
